Drakensberg Passes With Gillis

We all meet Gillis van Schalkwyk at the Green Lantern, Van Reenen on the Saturday morning at 07h45 to leave at 08h00. We then head out to Normandien Pass, where we enjoy the spectaculars views from the summit known as the ARK. We then proceed on down the pass to De Beers Pass where we visit two sites. From there we go to the original old Van Reenens pass discovered in 1856 by Frans Van Reenen. There are also two sites we visit, one at the summit and one at the foot after which we return to Van Reenen at about 16h00.

 

On Sunday Morning we head out south to Oliviers Hoek Pass, where we gather at the view site on the summit. We then move on to the Retief Pass including the statue of the Kaalvoet Vrou. Our next pass is Bezuidenhouts Pass which was the most popular pass used by the Voortrekkers. Our last pass is Tintwa from where we return to Van Reenen at about 16h00.

 

We then return home.

 

At each pass Gillis will give a brief history of the pass with some interesting stories about the farmers who lived there and helped establish these passes.
