Lesotho 2017

Long Weekend Trips (3 - 5 Nights)
Lesotho
Date: 14 April 2017 06:00 AM - 17 April 2017 04:00 PM

This trip is now FULL!

In view of the increasing popularity of the Sani Pass area a number of club members reconnoitred an area in the South East of Lesotho last year.

For the proposed club Lesotho trip over Easter this year (14th to 17th April) Gary Peacock and Ronnie Drew will lead the following trip.

Friday 14th: Meet at the Rotunda at 0730 to leave by 0800. Drive towards Matatiele via Underberg. Enter Lesotho at Ramatseliso’s Gate and head for Sehlabathebe National Park for the night.

Saturday 15th:  Go back to Sehlabathebe village and head for the Matabeng Pass. After completing this we will stop at the Bob Phillips camp for tea and coffee and then onto Tsoelike Bridge via some new  passes. We join the tar road between Quacha’s Nek and Sekake which we will follow through Mphaki to Devil’s Staircase pass before turning off just short of  Mount Morosi. We will then parallel the  Quthing River to a camp site on the river bank.

Sunday 16th: We will continue on the road next to the Quthing river and up a really great pass and before stopping at the Letsie Dam near the top of Ongeluksnek Pass. We then head for the pass and the border post. This pass is little more than a goat track and can become quite treacherous when wet. We will camp the night at the foot of the pass – hopefully in or close to the Ongeluksnek Nature Reserve.

Monday 16th: Before departing for home we hope to visit the nearby Mariazell Mission which was built over a century ago and has a working hydro-electric scheme.

Please bear in mind:

  1. this is a wild camp trip (ie we will not be staying in recognised camp sites) so we will need to be totally self-sufficient;
  2. this is rated at as a grade 3+ trip – much will depend on the weather
  3. the trip maybe altered by the leaders as they see fit according to conditions
  4. there is a limit of 10 vehicles
  5. all participants will be required to sign an indemnity form
